The Turkish DPA has fined Amazon for cookie violations. The Turkish Data Protection Authority (Kişisel Verileri Koruma Kurumu) has fined Amazon Turkey 1,200,000 TL ($273,435) for violations related to its electronic messaging and use of cookies. This is the first fine of its kind in Turkey. According to the Turkish DPA, Amazon sent commercial electronic messages to users and transferred personal data without the users’ explicit consent, and failed to provide information on data processing by means of cookies, as required by law.

The decision instructs Amazon to update its privacy statement, terms of use and cookie notice in Turkey. The decision was originally published in Turkish. However, Istanbul based IP & IT lawyer Mr Serhat Turan LLM CIPP/E has translated it. The English version is available via this link (PDF).
